WEEK 1
UVA Library high school interns 2017
Posted June 20, 2017
What surprised you the most from your first day at the Library and why?
What are your goals for the internship program?
When I think of virtual reality, I think of tech companies and engineers, not libraries. I was so surprised to see that Clemons had VR systems. In the remaining hour of our first day, after touring the library and hearing our mentors’ stories of how they became librarians, we decided to try out the technology at Clemons. We were introduced to a VR program that allows a user to select a location, such as Rome or Paris, and tour it by either walking around in the real world or flying above using a remote control. When I put on the VR headset, Los Angeles suddenly surrounded me. I could travel and explore the city from beyond the Hollywood sign to the ocean shore. I never would have thought that a library would be able to work on projects on a VR system.
After seeing this, I couldn’t help but wonder what other surprises the library might hold. In the next few weeks, I am hoping to find out more about the library’s resources, especially those that are electronic or technological. I wish to learn the specific requirements of different technologies in the library and how to operate them. I also wonder about the direction the library is headed in terms of computers or other technology in the future. Modern innovations, like VR systems, can change what libraries look like and how they operate, and I am interested in learning more about this shift towards technology.

What surprised you the most from your first day at the Library and why?
Something that surprised me the most from my first day at the library was how big it was. We went on so many tours and the sheer size of the multiple libraries was astounding! Also, the libraries weren’t only filled with books, which would be expected based on the definition of a library. Along with books, there were maps, scrolls, countless computers and other technology, and a whole Virtual Reality lab, which was very fun to experience.
What are your goals for the internship program?
I hope to gain a feel for what it is like to work in an academic library setting and see if I would possibly want to pursue it as a career path in the future. I have enjoyed many years of experience volunteering at our public library, but I am excited to see how the university libraries differ from the public environment. So far, I have really enjoyed what I’ve seen and am very excited to learn more.

What surprised you the most from your first day at the Library and why?
What surprised me the most of this internship was the type of routines that I will be doing every Thursday, because of what I’ll be doing for the library by categorizing them and adding new additions.
What are your goals for the internship program?
The goals for this internship are for me to get paid so I can go to PVCC and a four year university for me to study and have more library experience and hopefully get a permanent job here.

What surprised you the most from your first day at the Library and why?
What surprised me the most on my first day at the library was how everything was organized because i didn’t expect to see many old books and documents.
What are your goals for the internship program?
My goals are to learn new skills that I can use in my life. For example college, jobs and helping others. Another goal is to have more experience with academic library to tell others more about it and how I feel/felt about it. I’ll know more about my academic library when I go to school.

What surprised you the most from your first day at the Library and why?
The thing that have surprised me about an academic library since starting ,u job here in June 2017 is that there are 13 locations and various departments, that there is so much the average person probably does not know about the library and what it an offer.
What are your goals for the internship program?
Learning the basic teaching and research in preservation to repair and create protective enclosures for fragile library materials. In addition I want to set up few ambitious goals such as mastering technical skills, gaining essential background knowledge, perfecting interpersonal skills, and building a network of contacts.
