As UVA shifted to online learning in the spring 2020 semester, the Library’s Teaching & Learning team drew on expertise with Library media resources and online research materials to craft a guide for Teaching Online. This fall, remote teaching is as important as ever, and Teaching & Learning has been working to help students and faculty meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New videos and tutorials
The Teaching & Learning team continues to improve information and media literacy skills of teachers and students, revamping existing videos and adding new tutorials to provide the most up-to-date instruction. There are now more than 30 videos and tutorials supporting student learning! These are a few examples:
- Navigating Library databases.
- Using Zotero citation management software.
- Building websites with WordPress.
- Editing videos with DaVinci Resolve.

Remote Teaching
Since spring 2020, Teaching & Learning staff have worked with instructors and subject liaisons to expand the Library’s network of support for online instruction. This fall, workshops in using Zoom, and in getting instant feedback form students with Poll Everywhere, ensure that instructors have what they need to make online teaching a success. Robertson Media Center Makerspace
The Robertson Media Center (RMC) 3D Printing Studio is currently not open to the public, but staff are available to consult about alternatives while equipment is unavailable, and will even print models for you on a case-by-case basis for approved courses! Contact teachlearn@virginia.edu if you have 3D printing requests.
Inclusive teaching
Teaching & Learning has researched inclusive teaching practices and compiled a Zotero library of resources to help teachers ensure equity in the classroom.
Course Enrichment Grants
In partnership with the Library’s Course Enrichment Grant program, Teaching & Learning is engaging with faculty on such topics as representation of cultural objects and video ethnography.
