Alderman Renovation impacts begin this semester

Preparation for the renovation of Alderman Library is underway, and a few changes have taken effect:

  • The rear book drop has been moved to the Central Grounds Parking Garage (under the bookstore). You can also return books to any Library location (no matter where they were checked out).
  • Alderman stacks are now closed, but all Library materials are still available in person at Clemons or by request from Ivy Stacks. Find all materials on Virgo: search.lib.virginia.edu/
  • Construction fencing and equipment is now in place around the back sides of the building.

Alderman remains open until May 2020, when it will close until 2023.

Check out the Study Spaces Map! The mobile-friendly map features spaces on and near Grounds for quiet study, group work, and more.

Why renovate?

The renovation will create an environment that is welcoming to all, making the space more comfortable, usable, and accessible. Improved temperature control and air circulation will benefit both books and the people who use them. Light wells will be transformed into naturally-lit atrium study spaces, and a new entrance will be added on the north end of the building, off University Avenue.

Access around Alderman during construction. The map shows barrier-free sidewalks in a broad circle around the Alderman grounds. A large area is closed during construction, with alternate walking routes shown.
