Dean of Libraries Meets with Students about the Future of Alderman Stacks

In a meeting hosted by the English Students Association, Dean of Libraries Martha Sites and former UVA president John Casteen addressed students’ concerns about what will happen to Alderman Library’s collection if a proposed $160 million, six-year renovation project goes forward. Sites noted that the infrastructure of Alderman Library does not provide optimal conditions for the preservation of the books, particularly with aging electrical and plumbing systems. Sites also said that while there have been no official plans for the renovations themselves, the University has submitted a request to the state legislature to help fund the renovation, and is seeking funding to support the initial first stages.
