From January 16–31 UVA will join with the community to celebrate the life and legacy of slain civil rights champion Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a program of events centered around the theme “Silence as Betrayal,” taken from a line in King’s 1967 speech opposing the war in Vietnam.
Later this month, the Library will host two events in the auditorium of the Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library:
- Wednesday, January 25, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dr. Russel Jones, Professor of Psychology at Virginia Tech University, will speak on “Developmental Aspects of Trauma and the Lifelong Impact for People of Color,” focusing on how African Americans are still living with the traumatic effects of enslavement and segregation.
-
Monday, January 30, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. author, historian, and media personality Coy Barefoot will moderate a discussion presented by the University of Virginia Library, the Department of Media Studies, and the UVA IDEA Fund. The discussion, “#Words&ImagesMatter: Whose Words? Which Images?,” will feature a panel of distinguished academics taking up the subject of how we can heal our polarized nation.
