John M. Unsworth Chosen as University Librarian and Dean of Libraries

The Library is pleased to announce that John Unsworth has been selected as the university librarian and dean of libraries at the University of Virginia.

John Unsworth

Unsworth is currently at Brandeis University, where he has been vice provost, university librarian and chief information officer since 2012. Prior to coming to Brandeis, he served as dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, from 2003-2012.

This role will mark a return to the University (and Alderman Library) for Unsworth, where he received his Ph.D. in English and later served as a faculty member and as the first director of the Institute of Advanced Technology in the Humanities, from 1993–2003.

Unsworth’s areas of expertise include scholarly communication, digital humanities, history of books and publishing, and 20th-century American Literature. He will begin at the Library on June 25, succeeding Martha Sites, Interim University Librarian since the retirement of Karin Wittenborg in 2014.
