Mr. Small received a degree in chemical engineering from U.Va. in 1946, and has been a longtime supporter of the University ever since. He is the president of Southern Engineering Corporation and serves on the Board of Directors of a number of American cultural and historical associations.

An avid historian, Mr. Small built a unique and comprehensive collection of Declaration of Independence items. Desiring to share his treasure with students and scholars, he donated his entire collection to the University. He also gave very generously toward the construction of a new library building to house this resource. The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, which opened in 2004, is named in honor of Mr. Small and his wife, Shirley. Highlights of the Albert H. Small Declaration of Independence collection are on permanent display in the Declaration of Independence Gallery in the library.

From the tens of thousands of students, scholars, and visitors who have benefited from your generous gifts to the University of Virginia Library, happy birthday!
